Q: I called that phone number from the trailer, and I got this cryptic message! What should I do?

A: Well, what did the message tell you to do?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Something about thevisionary.net, right?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Have you tried going to http://www.thevisionary.net?

Q: Yes, and nothing happened!

Q: Yes, and it crashed my browser!

Q: Yes, and it played a sound and then ... whoa.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: Yes, and nothing happened!

A: Ah, this is a technical problem, not a puzzle problem. Is your volume turned up? Are you using a relatively modern v4.0 browser? You should hear a sound, and then an e-mail should pop-up. If this doesn't happen, consider upgrading or switching browsers and trying it again. Many of these puzzles appear to be designed for latest version of Internet Explorer (5.5 as I write this). If you really can't get this to work at all, ask a friend, or just give up. If this simple page doesn't work properly despite your best efforts, it's unlikely that you'll be able to play any of the more interesting puzzles that come later in the game.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: Yes, and it played a sound and then ... whoa.

A: That's right, she said WRITE her at thevisionary.net! Just follow her instructions, already!

Q: But I don't know who to write to!

Q: What happens if you send her e-mail?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: But I don't know who to write to!

A: Well, it's somebody at thevisionary.net, right?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You don't have to figure this out right away... you can come back to this.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: But you can also guess the answer.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Listen carefully to what she says.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: In particular, listen carefully to what she calls you.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: She calls you her child.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If you're her child, what would that make her?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Send e-mail to mother@thevisionary.net.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What happens if you send her e-mail?

A: Well, why don't you try it?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Polite people tend to write you back, if you just wait long enough.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If you're in such a hurry, you can find the mail that she will send back to you in the files section of the Cloudmakers site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: I got an e-mail back, but it doesn't seem to have any clues.

A: Maybe the clues are hidden.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Try highlighting the entire message.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If you use an HTML-friendly mail program, there is white text that only appears when you highlight it with your mouse.

Q: What's with this "you've seen her name before" business?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What's with this "you've seen her name before" business?

A: Well, where have you seen the name Jeanine?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You'll have to retrace your steps.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Try looking at the trailer again.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: According to Mother, Jeanine Salla, the sentient machine therapist in the credits of the trailer, is the key.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Try looking her up in Google!

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What should I find at Bangalore University?

A: Try to find out more about Jeanine Salla.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Most of the options are disabled because your browser doesn't support AI counselors... you can only access Campuses, Businesses, Departments, and News.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: The "Campuses" section and the "Businesses" section are mostly uninformative.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Search carefully through the entire news section. (Not that BWUNN.com is not a game site.)

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Amongst other things, you'll find two new sites listed there: www.metropolitanlivinghomes.com and http://www.cliniquedelille-fr.dk

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Jeanine Salla is also mentioned in the news, however.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: How could you find out even more about her?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: What department is she in?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Read the news article about her carefully.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: She's in the AI Studies department.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Go to the AI Studies department's page and search for "salla"

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: We're looking for more web sites and/or more phone numbers to call.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: See a phone number or e-mail address?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Call Jeanine Salla, and go ahead and send her e-mail.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Her phone number is 212-502-1177. Her e-mail address is jsalla@bangaloreworldu-in.co.nz. You can also get to the Familia Salla page from here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: And there's something else hidden on this page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: This link actually comes and goes.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's towards the bottom.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's on the bottom on the left.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There's a pair of eyes that blink open and closed on this page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Click on them, and they'll take you to a new site: http://www.aleph-naught.org/index.asp?a=1.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: I called Jeanine Salla. Now what?

A: Well, what did the message say?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Did you press 2?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Listen to the message you get when you press 2.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Try calling the number Jeanine leaves in that message -- 919-425-2310.

Q: How do I listen to Laia's message?

Q: What's Jeanine Salla's voicemail code?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: How do I listen to Laia's message?

A: Well, I bet you need Laia's code.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You don't have that information yet, but feel free to try.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Come back and try Laia's code in a later Episode. This Episode is just to get you exposed to all of the game sites.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What's Jeanine Salla's voicemail code?

A: You don't know it yet.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: But her Administrative Intelligence did give away a lot of info.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Don't go on until you've been to Laia's home page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Then you already know her middle name.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Just dial it on your phone.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: We won't follow up on this information until a later Episode. This Episode is just to get you exposed to all of the game sites.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: I e-mailed Jeanine Salla and got a response. What now?

A: Well, you follow the link, of course!

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There's also a hidden websites in one of Salla's reports.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Examine the report about the oneirophage carefully.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There's hidden text in this report.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's just like the hidden text in the Mother e-mail.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Select the text to find the hidden link.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's actually an e-mail address, but the right half works as a website.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's http://www.catskillseaviewclinic.org

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: Weird, I found this Demo in Jeanine Salla's representative papers that links to Cloudmakers! What's up with that?

A: Cloudmakers.org is an example of "Multi-person social problem-solving arrays considered as a form of 'artificial intelligence.' "

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: We think it's a kudo tossed to us on the part of the Puppetmasters behind the game for all our hard work at following their trail of crumbs. Flattering, isn't it? : )

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from Catskill Seaview Clinic?

A: None... but there is a puzzle on this site, so keep an eye out.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I access from Aleph-Naught.org?

A: Just one.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If you enter just about anything in the Nickname/Secret lines in Sophia, you'll be transported to http://www.elizas-tearoom.net

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I access from Eliza's Tearoom?

A: Quite a few!

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: But none of them are game-related.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: This site is a puzzle, so we'll come back to it later.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from Clinique De Lille?

A: Just the first one, linked to on the front page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's http://www.watchtower-security.net

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from Watchtower Security?

A: None... this site is a puzzle.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What's at the Familia Salla homepage?

A: Well, why don't you take a look around and see what you can see?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Seriously, just read the pages and follow the links.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There are links from this site to the Family Chan home page, and to In Our Image, the site for a pro-A.I. organization.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You also learn that a man named Evan Chan is dead... and it looks like he might've been murdered.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: This is also where you find the first puzzle of the game, the chemistry puzzle!

Q: How do I solve this funky chemistry puzzle?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: How do I solve this funky chemistry puzzle?

A: Why, it's elementary!

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Don't worry, it doesn't require expert knowledge of chemistry.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Take a good look at the periodic table of elements using this reference guide.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Maybe this "letter" is trying to tell us something. (The answer is NOT 406... why does everyone think that?)

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: This puzzle is a kind of rebus.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: The chemicals spell out a message, if you only substitute them with their chemical abbreviations.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: And also do the "math" in parentheses as for any rebus (for example, (Rb-B) would be just R).

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It spells out "coronersweborg".

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's not Coroner Sweborg! (You'd be amazed at how many people make this mistake.) Just imagine this puzzle had begun with Tungsten x3.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's a hint to go to http://www.coronersweb.org.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What other sites can I get to from the Chan Family Hompage?

A: Well, Evan links back to the Familia Salla page. They're all friends, right? What other links can you find?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You can get to Donu-Tech, Evan's employer, from his page here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There might have been a link to another site here once.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Maybe Evan forgot to take it out.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Look at the source code for Evan's page. (If you don't know how to do this, you might just want to reveal the next clue without trying. Using the Journey in place of finding an expert is perfectly fair game.)

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There's a hidden link to AIT in the source code. It's at http://www.ita-es.ro.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What am I supposed to do at the Coalition for Robot Freedom page?

A: You're supposed to find the addresses for two game sites.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: They're both opponents to the CRF.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Only one of them is clearly linked.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: That's http://www.7to1.net.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: The other is a little bit trickier. Make sure you've read the question in the Introduction about how to tell the difference between game sites and non-game sites. You'll need it here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You're supposed to figure out the address of another site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: CRF mentions the names of another organization.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Searching on this organization in Google and using our WHOIS trick from the introduction, we should be able to find another game site. (By the way, if you've been paying attention, you'll notice that SphereWatch, mentioned prominently on the CRF news page, is not a game site.)

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's referred to as a hate site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Parents are told to block this site, and others like it, and to work to have it banned.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's the Anti Robot Militia.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Search on them in Google.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Their web page is: http://www.unite-and-resist.org

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What can I find at 7to1.net?

A: There's a link to another site on this page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's their corporate sponsor.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: They have an ad banner.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You can find it on their "How you can help" page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's http://www.cybertronics-corp.net

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I find at Cybertronics?

A: None that you haven't already found.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There's at least one puzzle here, though.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from Donu-tech?

A: None that you can't get to some other way.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: But you're welcome to have a look around, since we'll return to this page later.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: In particular, you might try sending e-mail to all of those people.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Someone might send you new information.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Mario Dauphin's autoresponder has a link to http://www.unite-and-resist.org.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from AIT?

A: Only one new one.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: And it's right out in the open.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Check out the Graduate Placement page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You've encountered most of those sites already... except one.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You can access http://www.belladerma-srl-it.ro/ from this page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from ARM?

A: One is linked right off the homepage.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: That's the Sentient Property Crime Bureau: www.spcb.org

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: The other one is hidden more subtly, but in a manner you've seen before.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Again, make sure you've read the question in the Introduction about how to tell the difference between game sites and non-game sites. You'll need it here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You're supposed to figure out the address of another site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: This site mentions the names of a certain private agency.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Searching on this organization in Google and using our WHOIS trick from the introduction, we should be able to find this game site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's mentioned on the News page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's in the context of rogue AIs: those who have fled from their human masters.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: They've been hired as part of an investigation.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Belladerma hired them.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: They're Rogue Retrieval.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: This leads you to www.rogueretrieval.com.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from SPCB?

A: Nothing new, but there are a number of puzzles here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from Belladerma?

A: None, but there's something else to be found here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Don't continue until you've accessed the member-only pages on ARM.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You can get your own Universal Access Number there.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: And, on the contact us page, you're allowed to enter your UAN/password.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If you do so, Belladerma should send a three page fax to the fax number you listed on your UAN. If you don't have a fax machine, we have page 1, page 2, and page 3 on the cloudmakers-moderated site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from Metropolitan Living Homes?

A: You should be able to reach three new sites, all of which are directly linked. Read carefully. You really shouldn't need help for this.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You should be able to find the home page for Beate Bosch, Martin Swinton and Kate Nei.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from the architects' home pages?

A: None. Some of these sites have puzzles, though, so keep an eye out!

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from Rogue Retrieval?

A: There are two sites you can get to from here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: The first one is left as a taunt for one of the agents.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Check out Diane Fletcher's record.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: She's listed under "Agents" in the main menu.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Click on her record and you get a link to http://www.badmetal.net.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: This next one's the trickiest site to find. Pay close attention to the two news items listed on the front page: "Fletcher caps murderous Sexbot's flight" and "Tigerteam Takes Down Hostage-Killing Rogue"

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Look closely for details.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: These pages mention something in common.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Both mention a certain place in common.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Both Belem's capture and Fletcher's capture happened in the Washington D.C. Area ...

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: ... and they both mention a D.C. store.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Neither of them mention the name of the store, however. How could you find out what it is?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: People died in front of this store.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There must be records kept of where they died.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Where do you find records about dead people?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Don't go on unless you've solved the chemistry puzzle on the Familia Salla page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You have access to coroner's reports at PACO.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Read the question about PACO.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: What sites can I get to from PACO?

A: Don't go on unless you've been to the Rogue Retrieval site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You can find out info about dead people here.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Try a few out. Some of them require payment, which means that you can't access them. Others, like Evan Chan, have been paid for already by someone else. (Who is Sencha?)

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Try out dead people from Rogue Retrieval's news pages.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: One of the working ones is Kent Whitman.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: There are two sites to be found here. One of them is mentioned explicitly, the other requires solving a puzzle to find it.

Q: I can't find the one mentioned explicitly. Where is it?

Q: How do I find the other site?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: I can't find the one mentioned explicitly. Where is it?

A: You can use the Google/WHOIS trick to find another game site mentioned here. You may want to read the Rogue Retrieval question to get it.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's Electric Toyland, the DC store mentioned in both Rogue Retrieval news pages.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Its address is www.electric-toyland.com

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: How do I find the other site?

A: Read this coroner's report very carefully.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Now read it again in the context of the Rogue Retrieval news page.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Pay especially close attention to the pictures in the report.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Also pay close attention to the section labeled "Remainder of External Examination" in the coroner's report.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Mr. Whitman had some ocular implants for light/color filtering.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Diane Fletcher supposedly used some "nifty image manipulation work."

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If Whitman were filtering colors, what color would he filter?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Look at his eyes.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: He's got a green "bio-optic" color filter installed on his eyes.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Now look closely at the image of the PDA.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Why would it say bio-optic filtering enabled?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Do you suppose there's a hidden message there?

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If you don't know how to select particular shades of green, I can tell you how. Alternately, we can just pretend you did and skip to the end.

Q: I don't know how to filter the image, but I'm using Windows and I'd like you to tell me how.

Q: I don't know how to filter the image. Would you please just show me the filtered image?

Q: I've figured out how to decode the PDA, but I still don't see a site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: I don't know how to filter the image, but I'm using Windows and I'd like you to tell me how.

A: Fortunately, it doesn't require anything really extravagant to do this. You can do it in MS Paint.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: You can to it with the eraser tool.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: If you hold down the right mouse button (as opposed to the left mouse button) when you use the eraser tool, you erase only the foreground color, leaving all others intact.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Use the eye-dropper tool to make that exact shade of green the foreground color.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Now, holding down the right mouse button, wave the eraser over the image. The filtered result should appear.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: I don't know how to filter the image. Would you please just show me the filtered image?

A: OK, here's the filtered result.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

Q: I've figured out how to decode the PDA, but I still don't see a site.

A: You're going to have to use Google and Whois again to find a new site.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: And it's right there in the PDA image.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: But it's misspelled.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's where Kent's going for documents.

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: Also known as "dox."

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: It's the Rational Hatter. (Not to be confused with the Mad Hatter!)

Back to previous question

Back to the map

A: The web page is: http://www.rational-hatter.com
